HISTORYEarly mosaics can be traced back as far as four thousand years BC in Mesopotamia. The art of mosaic as we know it is thought to have originated in ancient Greece and passed on to the Romans. Some of the earliest 2nd and 1st century mosaics have been found in the stone and marble patterns pavements preserved at Pompeii. Mosaic continues to be an increasingly popular form of decoration today.
MATERIALS‘Tesserae’ is the collective name for the small tiles that when placed close together go to make up the mosaic picture. |

WHAT IS MOSAIC?Mosaics are pictures or designs created by embedding small pieces of many different types of material (ceramic or glass tiles, stone, terracotta, shell etc.) into a bed of cement or other form of fixative. Mosaics are found both indoors on floors, fireplaces, bathrooms, Mirrors, bench-tops etc and outdoors on bird baths, pavers, flowerpots, walls etc. |

Pebbles and shells can be gathered while walking along the beach outside the Red Shed. Mixed with other types of materials, stunning mosaics can be made.
Objects such as old vases, mirrors and crockery broken into random sizes or cut by hand into specific shapes can produce highly textured surfaces with interesting designs. It is not usually frost-proof, so is not always suitable for outdoors use.
Ceramics represent what is possibly the most versatile of mediums and encompass a wide range of materials.
Vitreous Glass imported from Italy, France, China and Mexico, is cut by hand and provides a rich palette of colour for the classical Mosaic piece. We have a large range of colours at the Red Shed. |
